Ammerlaan TGI: discover why Ammerlaan is called The Green Innovator
Grower of the month (08/2024): Ammerlaan The Green Innovator

Where it all began
It all started in the 1950s when the first generation of the Ammerlaan family began modestly cultivating cucumbers. Their hard work and passion for plants laid the foundation of the company.

In the 1980s, the family decided to take a new direction. They switched to growing green tropical plants, using starting material from Central America. This proved to be a successful move: the company expanded to 6.5 hectares of greenhouses, where thousands of plants are grown annually with care and craftsmanship. Sales manager Dennis Smits, who is celebrating his 25th anniversary at Ammerlaan this year, can attest to this and still strives for quality every day.

Ammerlaan’s assortment
Ammerlaan stands for variety and quality. Ammerlaan’s tropical assortment is extensive, offering more than eleven hundred types, including Dracaena, Yucca, Croton, Howea kentia, Sansevieria, Palms, Calathea, and Philodendron. The nursery supplies these in various pot sizes: from 19 to 65 cm cultivation pots, from 60 to 250 cm pot height, and from single plant orders to large mixed orders. About 95 percent of the plants arrive by ship from Costa Rica. Here are some of Ammerlaan’s main products:

  • Dracaena: Ammerlaan is known for its various high-quality Dracaenas, such as the Dracaena Cintho and Dracaena Janet Lind, two of the strongest varieties at Ammerlaan. Available in different tuft sizes (2, 3, 4, or carousels) and heights (1.80, 1.50, 1.20 meters, and 80 cm). The Dracaena Bicolor is also  special at Ammerlaan. In Costa Rica, the stems are bent with wire, giving them a unique shape resembling a candelabrum.
  • Yucca: Almost no one knows that the wood of the Yuccas is already eight years old. After arrival, they must acclimatize in a tent for six weeks, mimicking the conditions in Costa Rica. It then takes eight to nine months for the Yucca to be cultivated, ready to be placed in living rooms or offices. Employees pot the plants, clean them, and separate them. A lot of manual work, a lot of care. Only well-rooted and fully grown plants leave the company.
  • Croton: Ammerlaan’s gems are the Croton Iceton, Croton Petra, and Croton Mammi. The Croton Iceton stands out for its beautiful color scheme. Also available in various pot sizes and heights.

Ammerlaan’s latest innovation: Dieffenbachia Crocodile
Ammerlaan proudly presents its latest innovation: the Dieffenbachia Crocodile. This unique plant immediately stands out due to its special color variation and texture, reminiscent of crocodile skin. If you look closely, there even seem to be scales on the back of the leaves, giving the plant an exotic and mysterious appearance.

With the Dieffenbachia Crocodile, Ammerlaan brings not only a piece of nature indoors but also a touch of adventure and wonder. This plant is a perfect addition to both living spaces and offices and will undoubtedly stand out. Ammerlaan continues to innovate and surprise, with a commitment to beauty and quality that can be seen and felt in every new creation.

The Green Innovator
Ammerlaan bears the name "The Green Innovator," and for good reason.

In 2010, Ammerlaan became the first in the Netherlands to start a geothermal project: generating geothermal heat to not only heat their own greenhouses but also those of 55 fellow growers, a swimming pool, a school, a sports center, and 543 homes. All completely energy-neutral.

Ammerlaan also engages in biological control: To keep the plants healthy, each plant contains a bag of Ambliance from Bioline. These bags contain predatory mites, which are natural enemies of thrips that can damage the plants. Additionally, a drone flies through the greenhouse at night to destroy pests like moths.
